Requirements For Emirates ID Renewal 

For Expats

If you are an expatriates, also known as a foreign citizen, who is living and working in the UAE with a valid residency visa, then to renew your Emirates ID as an expat, you will need the following:

  • Original passport with a valid UAE residency visa. (A residency visa under renewal is also applicable)
  • Original Emirates ID card you are renewing
  • One recent passport-sized photograph (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) with a white background
  • Payment of the renewal fee (AED 370 for a two-year validity)

Additional requirements for expat applicants under 15 years old:

  • Original birth certificate OR father’s passport or Emirates ID
  • One recent passport-sized photograph (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) with a white background

In case someone else is applying on your behalf:

  • Original agency certificate from the acting person

For UAE Resident

UAE Residents are a category distinct from Expats. They are typically GCC nationals who do not require a residency visa to live in the UAE. If you are one of them, then you must know that the following are the requirements to renew your Emirates ID as a UAE Resident:

  • Firstly, an original valid passport is mandatory to have for the Emirates ID renewal of a UAE resident

Next, you also need to provide proof of residency in the UAE (one of the following):

  • Original valid trade license
  • Certificate proving enrollment in a UAE-accredited educational institution
  • Employment certificate or attested employment agreement

Additional requirements for applicants under 15 years old:

  • Father’s passport or Emirates ID OR the child’s original birth certificate 
  • One recent passport-sized photograph (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) with a white background

In case someone else is applying on your behalf:

For GCC National

GCC stands for Gulf Cooperation Council, which means citizens of countries belonging to Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). To renew your Emirates ID as a GCC National, you will need the following:

  • Original Valid GCC ID Card
  • Proof of residency in the UAE (one of the following):
    • Original valid trade license

How to Renew Your Emirates ID Card?

Step 1: Gather Documents

Before submitting your Emirates ID renewal application, it’s good practice to have all the necessary documents prepared. Depending on your nationality (Expat, UAE Resident, or GCC National), these will vary slightly. Generally, this will include your original passport, current Emirates ID, a recent passport-sized photograph, and proof of residency within the UAE.

Step 2: Visit the ICP Website and Submit the Renewal Request

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) offers a convenient online portal for renewing your Emirates ID. Visit the ICP website to learn about the Emirates ID renewal section. Here, you will be guided through an online application process. Carefully enter your details, upload scanned copies of your required documents, and double-check all information for accuracy before applying.

Step 2: Pay the Fees

Once your online application is submitted, you will be directed to a payment gateway to settle the renewal fees. The standard fee for a two-year validity Emirates ID renewal is AED 370. The ICP website accepts various online payment methods for your convenience. After successful payment, you will receive a confirmation message and a reference number for your application.

Step 3: Get a Biometric

How Many Days will you have to Renew an Emirates ID?

Luckily, you will have 30 days to renew an Emirates ID after its expiration. That’s why you must be careful and get your Emirates ID renewed before this limit, as further delay can cause a penalty. 

How Long Does it Take to Renew an Emirates ID?

Well, the processing time for renewing an Emirates ID in the UAE can vary depending on the chosen method:

For instance, the standard processing time for Emirates ID renewal typically takes 5 working days. This applies to applications submitted online or through typing centers.

On the contrary, ICP also offers a service called “Fawri” but for an additional fee. This service allows faster processing and issuance of your renewed Emirates ID within 24 hours. However, this option is only available to UAE and GCC nationals and applies to renewals, lost/damaged ID replacements, and first-time registrations.
